Advice on administration via enteral tube
First line recommendation is to change patients to an alternative beta-blocker with a licensed liquid formulation. Current resources suggest that it is likely to be safe to administer crushed tablets via enteral feeding tubes. Stop the enteral feed 30 minutes before administration. Crush the tablet and mix with 15-30mL of water. Draw up the solution into a 50mL enteral syringe then administer via enteral feeding tube. Flush the feeding tube with water before and after administration of the medication. A 30 minute break in feeding is required after administration of the medication.
Available as other formulations?
Safe or appropriate to crush
Consider changing to an alternative beta-blocker with a licensed liquid formulation if appropriate. Crushing or dispersing should always be used as a last resort but current text books and resources suggest it is likely to be safe. Clinicians should be aware that this is an unlicensed use of the medication.
