Advice on administration via enteral tube
Current resources suggest that it is likely to be safe to administer azithromycin suspension via enteral feeding tubes. Stop the enteral feed 2 hours before administration. Draw up the required dose of suspension into an enteral syringe and administer via the enteral feeding tube. Flush the feeding tube with water before and after administration of the medication. A 1 hour break in feeding is required after the medication has been administered.
Available as other formulations?
Tablet, eye drops, powder for solution for infusion
Note
If a patient requires enteral feeding then every attempt should be made to find an appropriate alternative medication due to the risk of compromised nutrition and blood glucose levels if the feed is withheld.
